The Government of Argentina has denounced late this Friday the cornering and threats to members of the Venezuelan opposition who are under protection in its embassy in the capital of Venezuela and has asked for the support of the international community to remove these people from the country.
“The Argentine Republic condemns the acts of harassment and intimidation against asylum seekers in the Argentine Embassy in Caracas, currently under the diplomatic protection of the government of Brazil,” begins a statement published by the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs in which it is also stated , “a call to the international community to condemn these practices and demand the necessary safe conduct to allow asylum seekers to leave the country.”
The Foreign Ministry note describes that it occurred in the vicinity of the aforementioned building. a wide deployment of armed forces, as well as the closure of surrounding streets, among other “maneuvers”, which have been criticized as “a disturbance of the security that must be guaranteed to diplomatic headquarters in accordance with international law.”
This condemnation comes after the Venezuelan opposition leader, María Corina Machado, spread a message on her networks in which the international affairs coordinator of her party, Pedro Urruchurtu, denounced the “siege” of the aforementioned Embassyin which he is located.
“Urgent! November 23. 06:42PM. Hooded officials of the DAET (Directorate of Strategic and Tactical Actions) with long weapons They once again besiege the residence of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas. They surround the diplomatic headquarters and block street access,” published Urruchurtu, who later added that the DAET and the SEBIN (Bolivarian National Intelligence Service) have blocked the mobile signal and are flying over the building with drones.
“The harassment to which the dictatorship in Venezuela subjects the Argentine Embassy in Caracas is contrary to International Law. The harassment must stop immediately and the right to asylum of opponents of the dictatorship must be guaranteed,” concluded the head of the OAS.
