On November 4 last year, Fernando Diniz, then in charge of Fluminense, won the Copa Libertadores da América. The Rio team beat Boca Juniors 2-1, in extra time, at Maracanã.

It was the culmination of great work by Diniz, who had also won the Campeonato Carioca that year and managed to impose his style, with lots of possession and touch of the ball, on Fluminense.

In addition, he also held the position of interim coach of the Brazilian team. He was hired in July 2024 to stay until June 2024.

A month later, Fluminense reached the final of the Club World Cup, when they fell to the popular Manchester City 4-0. Despite the elastic score, the defeat was expected, given the disparity between the squads.

Almost a year later, it can be said that the coach’s results have gone down the drain. He even won the Recopa Sul-Americana over LDU, in February, with Fluminense, but that was it.

With poor results, he was dismissed from the national team in January, five months earlier than his contract stipulated. At the head of the team, he had 2 wins, 3 defeats and 1 draw.

At Carioca, he was eliminated by Flamengo in the semifinals and, worse, left Fluminense in the bottom of the Brazilian Championship — he was fired in June.

At Cruzeiro, in 11 games, they won only 2 — they drew 4 and lost 5. This Saturday (23), they were defeated by Racing in the final of the Copa Sudamericana, 3-1. The team is seventh in the Brazilian Championship.
