The history of the property, which was once part of Fazenda Santo Antônio do Bonjardim, dates back to the 19th century. But the moment of greatest visibility and affluence at the place began in 1908, when the Grupo de Teatro Modestos company set up shop here. Founded six years earlier, it was at the time one of the oldest and most influential in the city, popularly known as “Modestos”.
