What is limescale and how is it formed?
Scale is a hard deposit of minerals, especially calcium and magnesium, that forms on surfaces that come into contact with hard water. When water with a high mineral content evaporates, it leaves behind this deposit. The color of limescale ranges from whitish to gray and reddish-brown, depending on the presence of other minerals.
Where are they formed most often?
Scale most often forms in the kitchen in the sink, near faucets, in the dishwasher and inside the kettle. Another critical place is the bathroom, where these deposits are in sinks, bathtubs or showers. The toilet, washing machine and boiler are also a problem.
Why buttermilk works
You may be wondering how an ordinary dairy product can remove hard limescale. Buttermilk contains lactic acid, which has a slightly acidic pH. Thanks to this, it can dissolve calcium and magnesium salts. In addition, the fats contained in buttermilk create a protective film on the surface that prevents the deposition of new layers of scale.
How to use buttermilk
There is no need to modify the buttermilk beforehand. Use it straight from the cup. Apply it with a sponge or cloth to the surface covered with limescale. Leave on for 15 to 30 minutes to allow the lactic acid to properly dissolve the mineral deposits.
After this time, wipe off the buttermilk with a soft cloth and thoroughly rinse the residue with clean water. To achieve a shine, you can polish the surface with a dry cloth.
A few final tips
To remove stronger deposits, leave the buttermilk on the incriminated areas overnight and then proceed according to the instructions described above. To prevent limescale from forming so quickly, regularly wipe surfaces dry and use a water softener. Before using buttermilk on sensitive surfaces such as marble, test its effect on a smaller, less visible area.
