An unpleasant surprise on the space station. A Russian cargo ship smells suspiciously

The International Space Station (ISS) has once again become the center of attention, this time due to a disturbing incident involving the arrival of the Russian Progress cargo ship. After it docked with the station, the international crew noticed an unusual smell, prompting a series of safety precautions and again highlighting the ongoing problems of the Russian space program.

Dramatic moments and immediate reaction

The situation developed shortly after the successful docking of the Progress cargo ship with the Poisk module on the Russian side of the station. Cosmonauts in the Russian segment immediately registered a suspicious smell, which forced them to take immediate action. As part of the safety measures, they had to wear protective equipment and put into operation additional air purification systems.

US astronaut Don Pettit, who is stationed in the US segment of the station, described the smell as “a smell reminiscent of spray paint”. This description caused immediate concern among ground personnel, as the presence of chemical vapors in the closed environment of the space station can pose a serious safety risk.

NASA, which is closely monitoring the situation, issued a statement Sunday afternoon assuring the public that the crew was not in immediate danger. The astronauts continued their planned procedures and worked to open the hatch between the Poisk module and the Progress ship. This process requires extreme caution and adherence to strict safety protocols.

The Poisk module, which was attached to the ISS in 2009, plays a key role in the Russian part of the station. It serves as one of the four docking ports on the Russian segment and is essential for receiving cargo and passenger ships. Its reliable operation is critical to maintaining station operation and crew supply.

This incident is not the first time that Russian spacecraft have encountered technical problems during missions to the ISS. In February 2023, a serious incident occurred when another Progress ship, attached to the station, experienced a loss of pressure in its cooling system. This series of problems raises increasing concerns about the reliability of Russia’s space program.

Roscosmos, the Russian state organization that runs the space program, has faced significant challenges in recent years. The ongoing war against Ukraine is having a significant impact on the functioning of the agency, which is facing severe financial constraints caused by international sanctions, an outflow of skilled personnel and problems in the supply chain of key components.

Reduced international cooperation and technological limitations due to sanctions are reflected in an increased number of technical problems on flights to the ISS, whether they are cargo or manned missions.

The ISS remains one of the few projects where the US and Russia continue to work closely together, even as that cooperation faces increasing challenges.

The incident raises questions about the future of ISS supply and space operations in general. NASA and other space agencies are already working on alternative solutions by developing commercial supply services, strengthening their own cargo and crew capabilities, and developing new technologies for the long-term sustainability of space missions. At the same time, intensive preparation is underway for the transition to a new generation of space stations.
