Since the minister overturned the secrecy of the decision that arrested military personnel, a large number of different narratives have taken over social media, especially messaging groups.
In the more than 90,000 public Telegram groups analyzed by Palver, the exchange of messages on the topic peaked on Tuesday (19), after the arrest of the military, and reached the same level again on Friday ( 22), after .
In groups of Bolsonaro supporters, there is a predominance of widespread delirium about the explanations that are being created to try to justify the attitudes of the military that were revealed in Moraes’ decision.
In a more timid and radical line, there is a portion of users who criticize Bolsonaro and the imprisoned military for being weak and cowardly for not having completed the plan.
However, most of the messages tried to promote the denial that the events occurred. For this, there is a strong attack on the press and the argument that this is all an invention with the aim of persecuting.
One of the videos released asks supporters to turn off their televisions and not read newspapers so that they are not contaminated by the lies spread by the media. Furthermore, there are many attempts to discredit the journalists responsible for disseminating the news.
This encouragement of alienation regarding the issue is justified by the attempt to avoid cognitive dissonance among the former president’s supporters.
This is because, with all the exchange of messages that took place between the military and which were taken into account in the decisions, the planning of the murders that would result in a coup d’état is quite explicit.
In this sense, some of Bolsonaro’s supporters have always believed in the fight of good against evil and that they would be defending the right side of history, democracy, family and Christian values. The planning revealed exposes another facet that is difficult for this group of supporters to accept. In this sense, denial brings relief.
In some of the groups, there was a commitment to try to awaken the population’s anger against . To this end, the published texts ignore everything that was exposed by Moraes’ decision and argue that in the same week, the STF “ordered the release of drug traffickers and arrest of the military” and that there is an inversion of values sponsored by the court’s ministers.
Another variation of this narrative is that Bolsonaro was being persecuted by the STF, mainly by the minister, for having ended corruption in Itaipu that fueled a scheme linked to ministers and their families. This text was forwarded in several groups pointing out what would have been the beginning of the persecution.
There are also those who argue that the revelation of the conversations prove Bolsonaro’s innocence, since his inaction would have been the main motivation for the military not to continue the criminal plan and, therefore, the former president would be the true hero.
This line of argument brings several variations on social media and among its main disseminators is the journalist Alexandre Garcia, whose videos circulate in public WhatsApp groups. Photos of Bolsonaro on the operating table after the stabbing endorse this narrative of heroism and innocence.
Finally, another portion of the former president’s supporters try to mock the accusations and infantilize the debate by claiming that there was never anything serious regarding the issue. In the videos and images, references to the case are called “gópi attempt” and the use of humor and sarcasm prevails.
The large amount of material produced including videos, images, audios and texts makes clear the importance of not losing the battle in the field of communication regarding this topic. The strategy adopted was to flood the groups with content, even if the messages are contradictory or disconnected from reality.
