Just under two months before the start of the Sul-American Sub-20the management of Conmebol (South American Football Confederation) changed the venue of the competition.
The tournament would take place in Peru from January 23 to February 16, 2025. Now, Venezuela will host the South Americanon the same dates.
Peru is no longer seeded
The reason for the change was not informed by , but it generated an unusual situation: a new draw to form the groups will have to be done, as required by the regulations.
This happens because Venezuela, as the host country, becomes the seed instead of Peru. The event will take place on December 6th.
At the end of October, the draw had defined the division of the keys as follows:
Group A
- Peru
- Uruguay
- Venezuela
- Paraguay
- Argentina
Group B
- Brazil
- Colombia
- Ecuador
- Chile
- Bolivia
This configuration is no longer valid, but it will continue to be the top seed in Group B, while the Venezuelans, not the Peruvians, will be the top seed in Group A.
U-20 World Cup will be no Chile
There will be ten participants, all affiliated with Conmebol. The first four qualify for the World Cup in the category, which will be in Chile between September 27th and October 19th, 2025.
As they are already classified as the host country for the World Cup, if the Chileans appear in the top four, the fifth-placed team will play in the FIFA competition.
Sub-20 American format
The competition format is maintained. In the first phase, participants play within each group, all against everyone, in five rounds. The top three in each group advance to the final hexagonal.
The six teams face each other, in six rounds, to define the champion.
Brazil is the biggest champion of the tournament
Brazil won the last edition, in 2023, in Colombia. There are 12 cups for the country, the biggest winner. Uruguay has eight and Argentina has five.
