Yamandú Orsi won the 2nd round of the Uruguayan election, held on Sunday (Nov 24, 2024), and takes the left to power after 5 years
The one from Uruguay, (from the Frente Amplio coalition, center-left), said that, with its victory, the country of “freedom“, and “equality” and “fraternity“, once again, “triumph”. The former mayor of Canelones received 49.84% of the votes compared to 45.87% for (National Party, center-right) in the 2nd round of the presidential election, held on Sunday (24.Nov.2024). With this, the left returns to power in Uruguay after 5 years.
“Despite the rain, the horizon is brightening, and that’s important”, said Orsi in a speech to supporters, cited by the newspaper. “We receive, in every corner, impulse and hope”, he declared.
Orsi is supported by former Uruguayan president José “Pepe” Mujica. Álvaro Delgado (National Party) was the government candidate, endorsed by the current head of the Executive. The Constitution of Uruguay does not allow re-election.
“Once again, the country of freedom, equality and fraternity triumphs, which is nothing less than tolerance and respect for others. Let’s continue on this path”, declared Orsi on Sunday (Nov 24, 2024).
“There is no future if we put a wall around ideas. Democracy is like that. When they asked us what it was like to suffer defeat, I said that we suffered several defeats, but we could not accept one that restricts freedoms. Long live Uruguay’s political parties, long live the democratic systemo,” he said.
Orsi stated that he will seek “a more integrated society” in which “no one gets left behind”.
In the 1st round, on October 27, Orsi obtained 43.9% of the votes compared to Delgado’s 26.8%. The election also decided the composition of Congress. None of the coalitions obtained an absolute majority in the Chamber. However, the Broad Front won 16 of the 30 seats in the Senate.
