Britain called on the G7 allies to provide military aid to Ukraine.
Britain will impose the biggest package of sanctions so far against the Russian “shadow fleet”, i.e. tankers, through which Russia circumvents embargoes on oil exports. The sanctions will apply to 30 vessels, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced on Monday. At the same time, he called on the allies from the G7 group to continue providing military aid to Ukraine. TASR informs about it based on a Reuters report.
Oil ships dealing with European and British sanctions have become a target
“We want to make sure that this time both the ships and those who stand behind these ships and circumvent European and British sanctions are affected,” said Lammy.
According to Britain, these ships transported oil and oil products worth several billion pounds in total last year. A total of 73 oil tankers will be subject to sanctions following the latest move by the British government.
Britain also imposed sanctions on two Russian insurance companies, AlfaStrachovanie and VSK. She also announced that if ships insured by these companies enter British territorial waters, their insurance will not be taken into account by the British authorities.
Lammy also responded to Monday’s news about a British mercenary captured by Russia in the Kursk border region. “Of course, we will do everything we can to provide this British citizen with the maximum possible support,” the minister said to 22-year-old Briton James Anderson.
