Feeding birds that have not flown to warm countries is important – it helps them survive the winter. What’s more, we will have beautifully feathered guests outside the windows.
It is best to exhibit in November. At the beginning of November, especially if it has not snowed, the birds should not have much difficulty finding food. However, at the end of the month, at the beginning of December, they will certainly appreciate the help. It is worth feeding them until approximately the end of March.
Regularity is very important in these winter months – the birds will count on our help. If we suddenly stop feeding them, we may do more harm than good. Therefore, when we have a feeder and decide to feed our winged friends, we should be systematic. Importantly, birds also quickly remember the time of day when we add food and they will appear at that time.

First of all, it cannot be waste. This is important because hungry birds will eat what we give them. If it is broken, it can seriously affect their health. It is also important that birds should not be fed with bread, especially white bread. Contrary to popular belief, such food is very harmful to them.
A variety of grains and fruits work best. We can pour into the feeder:
- Cereal grains — they can be given any type of grains. Ready-made mixtures that can be purchased in pet stores will work great. Birds eagerly eat corn, sesame and oat seeds.
- Sunflower — shelled or in the shell, which is important it cannot be salted. Due to its high fat content, this type of food will be perfect for the winter months.
- Fruit — this is an excellent choice if it is not very frosty outside. Fruits contain a lot of water, so they can freeze in sub-zero temperatures. On slightly warmer days, apples, pears and bananas will be a good option as food for wild birds.
- Nuts — they can be different, as long as they are not roasted. It is better to crush larger nuts so that, for example, tits can eat them without any problems.
Let’s also remember that we should clean up the uneaten leftovers. Regular cleaning of the feeder is very important because it prevents the multiplication of germs and bacteria, which are very dangerous for birds.
Most often, we pour food into the bird feeder, but it is also worth including a water fountain. They can be exposed to water all year round. In winter, you can pour warm water (not boiling water), thanks to which it will remain unfrozen longer. You can use a birdbath for water, but a bowl or even a flower stand will also work.
