Passengers on an easyJet flight witnessed and recorded stunning images of the eruption of the Sundhnukur volcano, located on the Reykjanes peninsula, in Iceland. The volcanic event, which has already caused the evacuation of nearby hotels and homes, is the 10th eruption in the last three years and the seventh in less than a year.
The Sundhnukur volcano, which remained dormant for 800 years until 2021, has awakened again, with lava reaching the parking lot of the famous Blue Lagoon. Despite the natural spectacle, authorities assure that the eruption does not pose any risk to commercial flights.
Experts highlight that the recent activity results from a dormant earthquake fault that has reactivated, underlining Iceland’s geological uniqueness, where fire and ice coexist in a unique balance.
A volcanic eruption on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula created a 7-kilometer fissure, sending lava flows toward Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon. This marks the seventh eruption in the region since late 2023
