The ukrainian war cannot be considered a “regional conflict”, as demonstrated among other factors by the presence of North Korean soldiers deployed by Moscow, and Europe’s objective must be to “support more” the Ukrainian arms industry: this was the conclusion of the German minister of Defense of Germany, Boris Pistorius, after meeting this Monday in Berlin with his counterparts from United Kingdom, France, Poland e Italia.
“Ukraine must be in a position to show more strength in its own production, especially of ammunition,” Pistorius added. On the list of “things to do” – good resolutions or ‘to do’ – for next year, the increase in Ukrainian ability to produce its defensive systems.
The meeting between Pistorius and his British colleague, John Healey, the Frenchman Sébastien Lecornu, the Polish Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz and the Italian Secretary of State, Isabella Raute, took place before the escalation of the situation in Ukraine. The five ministers agreed that support for the Ukrainian arms industry is part of the commitment between the countries of the I’LL TAKE to increase defense spending.
Against extremism
“It is not just about talking about rising from 2% of GDP or to 2.5 or even exceeding 3%, but to consider that this objective also includes support for the Polish arms industry, especially with regard to ammunition and drones,” said the Polish minister. Your country, like the Baltic states as a whole, has increased its defense allocation beyond 3% in the last three years. Germany, which for decades was in the rear van, reached the 2% mark in 2024 and intends to maintain this level or increase it.
“That is the majority opinion of the population and of the big parties, with more or less enthusiasm. The exception is two well-known extremist parties,” said Pistorius, who thus referred to both the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) as on the populist left of Sahra Wagenknechttwo extremist parties that agree in their rejection of arms supplies to kyiv.
