How to protect roses for winter? Here's when and whether to cover or mound your flowers

for winter, we need to watch the weather forecasts. If we cover the plant too early, it may continue growing, and when really low temperatures come, the unready bushes will freeze.

We start protecting roses only after the first frost, when the plant stops growing. If there are frozen leaves on the stem, we can remove the fallen ones ourselves and we must collect them. It is important not to leave them on the soil. Pathogens of powdery mildew, black spot or pests such as spider mites may overwinter and attack in the next season. After the first frost, it is also worth mounding the bushes. We make a mound around the base of the bush. It should be about 20-30 cm high. You can use soil, compost or bark for this. In case of severe frosts, it is worth additionally covering the roses. You can use agrotextile, straw or conifers twigs. It is important that the covering material is airy to prevent the plants from rotting. Rose shoots can also be wrapped in agrotextile or jute to protect them from frost and wind. In the case of climbing roses, it is also worth securing the supports to which they are tied. It is important to check the cover of roses regularly, especially after strong winds and snowfall. If there is heavy snow on the roses, it must be carefully removed to prevent the shoots from breaking. We also observe the forecasts: if, after a series of very low temperatures, significant warming occurs, it is worth removing the agrotextile cover and putting it back on when the temperature starts to drop. In early spring, when the risk of severe frosts has passed, we gradually remove the cover from the roses. First, we remove the covering materials and then clear away the mounds of earth. After removing the covering, we prune the roses, removing damaged and dead shoots.
