Roads and rail lines were closed today after Storm Bert hit the country at the weekend, causing widespread flooding and killing four people.
More than 200 warnings and alerts were in place across England and Wales, while train services from London to the South West were canceled and rail services in central England were severely disrupted.
“Do not attempt to travel on any route today,” Great Western Railway, whose trains link London with Bristol and Cornwall, said via X.
Key arterial roads in Northamptonshire and Bristol were closed while rail links between London and Stansted Airport, the fourth largest in Brittany, were disrupted due to fallen trees on the tracks.
The problems were caused after Storm Bert hit Britain late on Friday, bringing snow, rain and strong winds.
The Met Office maintained a strong wind warning for northern Scotland today and said weather conditions in that part of the country were expected to improve early tomorrow.
