A tourist boat with 45 people on board sank this Monday in the Red Sea, with a mega rescue operation underway, according to the BBC, citing local authorities. So far, Egyptian authorities have rescued 16 people, three security sources told Reuters.
Several tourists have already been rescued, but many are missing, and it is currently unknown whether there are any fatalities.
There would be 31 tourists and 14 crew members on board. Boat sank during diving excursion off the coast of Marsa Alam, in the Red Sea.
The alarm was raised around 5:30 am on Monday by a crew member. The coast guard was immediately called to the scene to try to locate the boat.
According to Maj-Gen Amr Hanaf, governor of the Red Sea province, some of the survivors found in the Wadi el-Gemal area, south of Marsa Alam, were airlifted to receive medical attention.
