Relocating potted plants in winter is sometimes necessary. However, it is worth delving a little deeper into this topic so as not to make a mistake that will completely waste our specimen. We need to know not only when it is necessary to move the plant, but also how to do it so as not to. We tell you how to safely move flowers to a new place.
Many potted plants, even if they are undemanding species, are attached to their place and surroundings. Each specimen has specific needs regarding appropriate temperature, air humidity and access to light.
In winter, however, many of these factors change because there is much less light and the air becomes dry due to heating. Moreover, temperature fluctuations are more noticeable. Therefore, many people decide to move their plants to another place.
However, this is not always a good idea, especially if we do it without properly preparing our specimens. Maybe this lead to the so-called environmental stress, which manifests itself in the inhibition of plant growth, rotting of roots or falling leaves.

Therefore, if we notice that the conditions in a given place that were favorable to our plants have changed, it is really worth changing them. Let us remember, however, that this process requires appropriate preparation and implementation so that it does not negatively affect the development of our company. Here are the steps you should follow if you want to rearrange flowers in winter:
- Assessing the plant’s needs – before we move it, let’s check what this species needs. Let’s make sure what its light requirements are, how it reacts to drafts or a nearby heat source.
- Finding a place for flowers – once we know the needs of our plants, we can choose an appropriate position for them. Species that like light should be placed on the southern windowsill, while plants that prefer less light should be placed on the eastern or western windowsill. At the same time, avoid drafts or the immediate vicinity of doors.
- Preparing the plant – this is especially important for more delicate species. We cannot suddenly move a specimen from one place to another if the difference in conditions is significant. We need to gradually move the pot for a few hours a day and return it to its former place at night. Only after 5 days of such action, we can move it to a new position permanently.
- Providing appropriate conditions – after moving the plant to a new place, try to maintain stable conditions there. If the air in this room is very dry, it is worth placing an air humidifier nearby or regularly spraying the leaves with water at room temperature.
- Checking the plant’s reaction – after the change, we should regularly observe our specimen to know how it reacts to the change. A common symptom is drying, yellowing or falling leaves, which may initially be a natural adaptive reaction, but if the plant’s condition deteriorates over the next few weeks, it may turn out that this location was not a good idea.
