Even though Christmas is still a month away, many are already starting to buy some products so that there is nothing missing on the table on Christmas Eve. This festive season, the Olhão Market, in the Algarve, is the setting for several television reports and, less than a week before the month of December begins, CMTV has already been to the famous market to learn about what has been one of the biggest concerns of Algarve: the increase in food prices.
“There are a lot of people worried about the prices of products, people notice a lot of difficulty, even eating”, says a seller at the Olhão Market. Also interviewed by , another seller in the same location, reports that people “think fish is very expensive”, so, “instead of taking a kilo, they only take half a kilo”.
Although the most common tradition in Portugal is to eat cod on the night of Christmas Eve (December 24), in the Algarve, more specifically in Olhão, litão was eaten. In the past, litão was also known as the “cod of the poor” and that is why it was the choice of many people from Olhão. Today, litão is more expensive than cod, so many are starting to give up this tradition to save some money.
Saving is the watchword for most people in Rio Grande do Sul and that is why the rise in food prices has been a concern. “Last year the price of cauliflower was the same as this year, the price of Portuguese cabbage too, but the price of sweet potatoes and zucchini will rise”, says another seller in the same report.
What is already known is that in 2025 the price of bread could increase significantly. The association that represents a large portion of the bakery sector has already warned of a possible increase in the price of bread at the beginning of next year due to the increase in the minimum wage to 870 euros.
