The president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), will meet with deputies from the Parliamentary Agricultural Front (FPA) this Tuesday (26).
The meeting takes place amid the crisis involving the French supermarket chain produced by Mercosur countries.
Last week, Carrefour’s CEO, Alexandre Bompard, stated that the group would stop purchasing products from slaughterhouses in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
The network’s positioning is a response of solidarity with French agribusiness, which has positioned itself against the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union (EU).
Carrefour’s position generated negative reactions in Brazil. In recent days, ministers, congressmen and businesspeople have taken a stand against the French network’s decision.
On Monday (25), Lira on behalf of the network. “It is not possible for the CEO of an important group like Carrefour not to retract a statement of practically not purchasing animal proteins from and originating in South America”.
“Environmental reciprocity”
During the meeting with Lira, the FPA will discuss the processing of two bills that make up the so-called “environmental reciprocity” package. One of the texts is being processed by the Senate Environment Committee and is reported by Senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MS).
The project seeks to make compliance with environmental standards compatible with those of Brazil mandatory for the availability of goods on the Brazilian market.
The other project under analysis is being processed by the Chamber’s Environment and Sustainable Development Committee, but does not yet have a defined rapporteur.
The proposal prohibits Brazil from participating in agreements that could represent restrictions on Brazilian exports and free trade.
Congressional reaction
Deputy Alceu Moreira (MDB-RS) presented a request on Monday calling for the creation of an external commission to monitor
According to the congressman, the objective of the external commission is to “follow and monitor” the boycott of Brazilian production. The installation of the collegiate depends on an order from Lira.
Furthermore, Tereza Cristina presented one to the French ambassador to Brazil, Emmanuel Lenain, for a hearing at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, with the aim of providing clarification on Carrefour’s stance in relation to the Mercosur agreement.
