A fire broke out at the Tupras refinery in the Aliaga area of Izmir. Then followed successive explosions with the largest of them occurring at approximately 20:10 at night. Fire crews rushed to the scene and efforts to extinguish the fire continue.
Although no deaths or significant property damage have yet been reported, authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. While it is unclear where in the refinery the fire started, environmental safety precautions have been taken.
The latest information is about an explosion in the crude oil furnace. In the same refineries there was an explosion in 2017, with four dead and one injured.
Also, on November 5 this year, a strong explosion occurred at the refineries of the same company in Nikomedia (Izmit), approximately 95 kilometers east of Istanbul. From that explosion, 12 people were injured, according to a company announcement.
A view I took from a distance of the fire that broke out as a result of the explosion in the facilities in Aliağa / Izmir.
