The vice-president (PSB) said this Wednesday (27) that the economic team’s spending cut package could be announced in the next few hours.
Alckmin, also minister of Mdic (Development, Industry, Commerce and Services), stated that the package of measures will “strictly comply” with the fiscal framework.
“We should have all the fiscal adjustment measures here in the next few days or hours, ensuring strict compliance with the fiscal framework,” he stated.
“The whole world went into debt due to Covid, US$ 100 trillion. There is a need to make a big effort in the fiscal area, and Brazil will strictly comply with this fiscal framework”, he added.
Alckmin participated this Wednesday morning in the opening and first debate session of the national industry meeting, which was held in Brasília. The event was also attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
The vice-president’s statement comes amid expectations for the announcement of spending-cutting measures, which have been worked on by the Finance Minister’s team, Fernando Haddad.
The measures must be presented by Haddad in a meeting with leaders of the Chamber of Deputies, mediated by minister Alexandre Padilha (Institutional Relations). There is also an expectation that the head of the economic team and, eventually, Lula, will meet with the presidents of the Chamber and the Senate, respectively Arthur Lira (PP-AL) and Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
The announcement of the spending cut package comes after weeks of back and forth and successive delays. On several occasions, Haddad announced that the package was closed, with only one detail or another remaining to be adjusted.
Government members pointed out that the package of cost containment measures, prepared by Haddad, ranged from R$25 billion to R$30 billion in 2025, and R$40 billion in 2026.
Among the measures expected to be announced are changes to limit minimum wage earnings. The strengthening of anti-fraud tools in social benefits is also under discussion, such as the BPC (Continuous Payment Benefit), which is paid to elderly people or low-income people with disabilities.
