Catalonia, Scotland? Map shows that the largest independent “kingdom” is in Italy

The “separatism map” shows where independence intentions are strongest – another shows what another Europe would look like.

When talking about separatism, on independence certain regions of Europe, it is natural to immediately think of Catalonia. Or in Scotland.

The separation of Catalonia of Spain has been a priority for many Catalans for a long time – although in recent times this intention seems to have . Frustration, fatigue and division reign in the Catalan separatist movement.

Many Scots also preferred to be completely removed from London’s decisions. When she was still Prime Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon insisted on a new one (after the one held in 2014) on possible independence from the United Kingdom. The subject has not died, but has been more dormant.

However, when looking at the “map of separatism in Europe”as was recently classified in , in fact, these two cases are there – but they are not the ones with the most separatists.

The map shows the percentage of local inhabitants who are in favor of independence.

There is no reference to Portugal, as expected.

A Catalonia occupies a prominent place, with the third highest percentage: 44%. A Scotland is not far away: fifth place, with 40%.

But the “king” of the separatists is in Italy: Veneto.

The most visited region in the country (its capital is Venice and Verona is the city of Romeo and Juliet) is also the fourth region with the most population: 5 million inhabitants. The local political-social movement argues that the identity, heritage, traditions, culture and even the language are different from the rest of Italy. He wants more autonomy, or even independence – in a country full of divisions.

The second area with the most separatists is Republika Srpska. A region of Bosnia-Herzegovina that is rarely talked about here – but is full of Serbs. It was the scene of a war that killed tens of thousands of people during the breakup of Yugoslavia.

The map was published a few years ago in . Its creator, who has the nickname bezzleford, later explained where he got the numbers.

In , the map creator says that he averaged the polls on the subject – but excluded Flanders or Lombardy because Belgium’s statistics are “very confusing”.
