Before we put the forks, spoons and knives on the neatly decorated table, it is important to remove the gray coating and other stains that have accumulated on the dishes over several months. How can this be done without damaging the surface of the cutlery?

How to clean silver cutlery?

We select silver cutlery from boxes on special occasions – holidays, birthdays, special events. We take care of their flawless appearance to complete the perfect image of the table set and its decoration. There are several ways to keep cutlery shiny and free of unsightly scratches.

  • Immerse the silverware in a glass of sparkling drink for an hoursuch as Coca-Cola. The acid in the drink has cleansing properties.
  • Dissolve 5 tablespoons of vinegar and 4 tablespoons of baking soda in 3 liters of hot water. Bring the mixture to a boil, remove from the heat and dip the cutlery into it. Let them soak for about 10 minutes. Then rinse the cutlery in lukewarm water and polish with a dry cloth.
  • Dissolve 2 tablespoons of ammonia and 2 handfuls of soap flakes in 3 liters of hot water. Bring the mixture to a boil, remove from the heat and dip the cutlery into it. Soak them in the solution for about 10 minutes. Then rinse the cutlery in lukewarm water and polish with a dry cloth.
  • Put a spoonful of potato starch or baking soda in a bowl. Add a little water and mix until it forms a “slurry”. Spread it on silverware. Rinse and let dry without wiping.
  • Apply a little toothpaste on a cloth and polish the cutlery dry. Then rinse the cutlery in lukewarm water and polish with a dry cloth.

How to get rid of black spots from silverware?

Silver cutlery can be damaged light, air, moisture, cigarette smoke or components of some foods, such as vajcia, mayonnaise or sea fish. When silver reacts with a sulfur compound in the air, it becomes covered with a dark, unsightly coating. If the cutlery is not used for a long time, it will darken even more. This process can be reversed by restoring the original appearance of forks, spoons and knives. How can blackened cutlery be cleaned?

Lemon juice and ash

  • Mix lemon juice with ash from a fireplace or cigarette.
  • Stir until a “slurry” is formed.
  • Apply it to the blackened places of the cutlery.
  • Then rinse the silver in lukewarm water and don’t forget to wipe it dry.
  • You can use vinegar instead of lemon juice, and soda instead of ash.

Salt and aluminum foil

  • Pour a liter of water into the bowl.
  • Dissolve 5 tablespoons of salt in it.
  • Line the second bowl with aluminum foil.
  • Place the cutlery on the foil and cover it with water with dissolved salt.
  • Leave it on for a few hours.
  • Then rinse the cutlery in lukewarm water and polish with a dry cloth.

Sour milk

  • Soak dull and blackened cutlery in curdled milk for about 10 minutes.
  • Then polish with a dry cloth (without rinsing).

Cleaning stainless steel cutlery?

You can clean stainless steel cutlery when cooking potatoes. It sounds unbelievable, but it’s true.

  • Place the cutlery in the water in which the potatoes were previously boiled.
  • Leave them there for at least 10 minutes.
  • Then rinse them thoroughly and dry them thoroughly.
  • You can achieve the same effect by dipping the cutlery in the water left after cooking the spinach.
  • If you add a little ammonia to the water, the cutlery will regain its beautiful color and shine.

How to take care of silver cutlery?

Make an effort o take care of the cutlery not only when you take it out of the drawer on special occasions.

  • Thorough cleaning and care immediately after use will help prevent stains and deposits.

Proper storage is also important. Do not forget to store them in a dry and air-tight place, then you will also prevent dark coloring. Here are some tips, how to take care of cutlery:

  • knives should not be washed in hot water because they will become dull,
  • stainless steel cutlery is resistant to chemicals and should not be washed in water with detergents,
  • too frequent cleaning of silver cutlery can lead to corrosion and damage to dishes,
  • acidic foods contain copper, which contributes to the coating on cutlery,
  • silverware should be stored in a bag made of natural material, preferably additionally wrapped in linen fabric,
  • do not use silverware when eating foods containing eggs and mayonnaise, as the silverware may become heavily stained.
