The entity said it will formalize a complaint to enforce the principles of economic freedom and the protection of Brazilian production

The CNA (Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock) announced last Tuesday (26.Nov.2024) that it will adopt measures with the European Union against Carrefour and other French companies that stated that they will no longer buy meat produced in Mercosur countries, including Brazil.

The entity argues that Brazilian producers were impacted by false information. The CNA stated that it will contact its law firm in Brussels, Belgium, where the European Union is headquartered, to formalize a complaint to enforce the principles of economic freedom and the protection of Brazilian production.

“We were surprised by the attitude of Carrefour and other companies that, from one moment to the next, tried to show an image that the meat we are placing in Europe is not quality meat, it does not meet European standards. This is not true because Brazil has become the largest exporter in the world, we not only serve the United States, Europe, the Middle East but also China and Asian countries”explained João Martins, president of the CNA, in a publication made on the entity’s official website.

On November 20, CEO of Carrefour in France announced that the chain would no longer sell meat from Latin America, arguing that the products do not meet French quality standards and standards. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock responded to the Carrefour CEO’s allegations about Brazil not complying with health requirements and standards, classifying as “liars”.

“Faced with this accusation, we were forced to contact our office in Brussels and our law firm that serves us in Brussels to take the appropriate actions to seek clarification of the truth”added Martins.

Last Tuesday (Nov 26) the supermarket chain published a statement, but without reconsidering its decision to stop purchasing meat from Mercosur. “We know that Brazilian agriculture provides high quality meat, respect for standards and flavor. If Carrefour França’s communication generated confusion and could have been interpreted as questioning our partnership with Brazilian agriculture and as a criticism of it, we apologize”says the document.
