The Minister of Finance will make a statement to the nation on Wednesday night (27) to talk about ministry issues – the expectation is that he will give a preview of the spending cuts that have been stuck for more than three weeks and could have an outcome later this afternoon.

Although the government did not officially announce the topic, the statement was titled “Stronger Brazil. Efficient government. Fair country” and must be 7 minutes and 18 seconds long. The broadcast will be made on radio and television at 8:30 pm.

The expectation of a statement on spending cuts had already been circulated since Tuesday night (26) and aims to soften the impact of measures that could be considered anti-popular. Among them are changes in the criteria for adjusting the minimum wage, stricter rules for granting the Continuous Payment Benefit (BPC), reduced access to the salary bonus, and minimum retirement age for military personnel.

Changes in items such as the minimum wage, BPC and constitutional minimums for education and health are sensitive to the president (PT), who had been showing some resistance and even faced the threat of dismissal from ministers such as Carlos Lupi, from Social Security.

There is an expectation that he will meet this afternoon with Lula and the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), to discuss the content of the package and changes constitutional provisions that will need to pass through Congress.

The meeting was reported by interlocutors and was not on their official agenda at the time of this report – Haddad, for example, does not have any appointments scheduled throughout the day.

As indicated by the interim leader of the government in the Senate, Otto Alencar (PSD-BA).

“It’s not closed yet, but that’s the forecast. [A reunião] It shouldn’t happen tomorrow [quarta]. It should be at the leaders’ meeting, which takes place on Thursday morning,” he said in an interview with the newspaper The Globebut without giving details of the package contents.

Despite the possibility of Haddad presenting the package this Thursday (28), Alencar says that the expectation is that the proposal will only be until next year, due to Congress’ tight agenda at the end of the year.

“There are a lot of projects to vote on, and it should only take two weeks, until the 19th. There is Tax Reform, LDO, Budget. So the package should last until 2025”, said Alencar.
