Corinthians paid goalkeeper Hugo Souza in cash from Flamengo last Tuesday (11/27). The São Paulo club paid upfront the amount of 800 thousand euros – around R$4.8 million at the current price – for 50% of the player’s economic rights.
In total, Timão disbursed R$7.3 million between fines, the loan amount and the purchase price to sign the athlete.
One issue, however, could hinder the signing of Hugo Souza by Corinthians: Alvinegro suffered a transfer ban and could only sign up new players from 2026 onwards.

Will Corinthians be able to register Hugo Souza?
According to “Uol”, Corinthians plans to resolve the transfer ban with FIFA by the end of December. With this, Hugo Souza could be signed up for next season. If the situation is not resolved, the player will not be able to play for Timão in 2025. The player’s loan contract only runs until the end of this season.
It is worth mentioning that Flamengo received surveys for Hugo Souza, but Corinthians had the preference to purchase until November 30th.

Why did Corinthians receive the transfer ban?
Corinthians was punished with a transfer ban by FIFA for a debt owed to Paraguayan defender Balbuena, who played for Timão between 2016 and 2018, in addition to a second spell between 2022 and 2023.
Currently, according to the website “Uol”, the debt is around R$6.9 million. Of this amount, R$1.9 million goes to the player and another R$4.3 million goes to the company of which he is a partner, The General Sports Ltda.
How long does the transfer ban last?
FIFA punished Corinthians in three transfer windows without being able to sign up new players. Therefore, if Timão does not solve the problem, the team will not be able to hire until the beginning of 2026. The way to resolve it is for the Corinthians board to reach an agreement with Balbuena for payment in installments, or pay off the debt in full.
