A group of women interrupted the session of the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) of the Chamber this Wednesday (27) to protest against the vote on a PEC (proposed amendment to the Constitution) that intends to ban it in the country.
Shouting “remove the PEC”, “what if it were your daughter?”, “a child is not a mother, a rapist is not a father” and “this PEC only defends rapists”, the group of women entered the CCJ auditorium, interrupting the session. They were participating beforehand in an event elsewhere in the Chamber to address gender-based political violence.
On the one hand, left-wing deputies endorsed the chorus, while right-wing parliamentarians repudiated the act and asked the president of the collegiate, Caroline de Toni (PL-SC), to continue the discussion.
De Toni then ordered the suspension of the session for 15 minutes and the transfer of the meeting to another auditorium in the House. Only deputies and their advisors will be allowed to enter this location.
There was a beginning of commotion among protesters outside the auditorium, leading to yet another change of location to continue discussing the proposal.
Presented in 2012, the PEC was authored by , former president of the Chamber. The text proposes a change in article 5 of the Constitution, which deals with the fundamental rights of citizens, including the inviolability of the right to life “from conception”.
Today, in Brazil it is authorized in three cases: pregnancy resulting from rape, risk to the woman’s life and fetal anencephaly. With the text of the PEC, the ban would also advance in these cases.
