The final vote by MEPs took place during the plenary session in Strasbourg, France. At the end of the vote, the new European Commission was applauded by part of the chamber. The President of the European Commission and the President of the EP, Roberta Metsola, hugged.
The approval came after scrutiny by European parliamentarians (including hearings for each of the nominated commissioners) and intense negotiations in recent weeks between center-right, socialist and liberal groups for a political agreement on the seven names that were pending for a total from 26, reached a week ago.
Before the vote, Ursula von der Leyen spoke to MEPs, promising to continue fighting for freedom and European unity during her second term.
“Our fight for freedom may look different from that of past generations, but the stakes are just as high and honorable, and it will mean making difficult choices, making massive investments in our security and prosperity, and, above all, it will mean maintaining us united and faithful to our values, finding ways to work together and overcoming fragmentation.”
