Datena ends contract with Band after 20 years

José Luiz Datena is no longer part of the Band. After two decades of work at the station, the presenter ended his contract. The decision was confirmed by Band, which highlighted the journalist’s history on programs such as Brasil Urgente, in addition to his work in sports coverage and entertainment projects.

“By mutual agreement, Band and presenter José Luiz Datena terminate the contract. Datena successfully commanded the Brasil Urgente program for years with a large audience, as well as participating brilliantly in sports coverage and entertainment programs”, informed the broadcaster.

The broadcaster had already decided that Datena would not return to command Brasil Urgente. Since the presenter’s departure, Joel Datena, the journalist’s son, took over the program. The police format remains one of the standout attractions on the Band’s schedule.

“The Band reinforces its enormous affection for Datena and the bonds of friendship with the professional, who has had an enormously successful trajectory at Grupo Bandeirantes for more than 20 years”, concluded the official note.

Attempt in politics and recent controversies
Datena’s departure comes after his candidacy for Mayor of São Paulo. He came in fifth place in the race, with less than 2% of the votes. During the campaign, the presenter was involved in an incident involving Pablo Marçal, a political opponent, in which he used a chair in a moment of tension.

Datena’s next steps have not yet been disclosed. The communicator, however, has a consolidated history in Brazilian television and does not rule out new projects in the area.
