Tourist yacht Sea Story sank this Monday near Marsa Alam (Egypt) leaving at least four dead. The Egyptian authorities have explained that, according to the survivors, the accident was caused “by a large sea wave that hit the boat and capsized it suddenly and quicklyin about 5 or 7 minutes.”
However, tragedies sometimes also leave a story with a happy ending. And that is what happened in this shipwreck in the Red Sea. The survivors stated that the event took place when “Some of the passengers were inside the cabins, that is why they did not manage to leave the ship.”
And this has been confirmed directly by a submariner who has participated in the rescue efforts of the Sea Story. Indeed, A group of people who could have been rescued had been locked in their cabins.
However, what I did not expect divercalled Khattab al-Faramawy, was that among the trapped individuals was his nephew Youssef, 23 years oldalso a diver who worked aboard the yacht as a diving instructor for tourists.
In fact, The young man was trying to rescue the people left in the cabin when he became trapped on the boat, which was mostly submerged except for half a meter that stuck out of the sea. Survivors could benefit from an air bubble which allowed them to survive for 24 hours.
“We dive to a depth of 12 meters and we found the survivors who had been trapped in the ship’s cabins,” Khattab al-Faramawy said in statements to the BBC.
The submariner also highlighted that the rescue It was a “complicated mission” due to darkness underwater. “We use flashlights to try to find our way in the dark”he detailed.
