Individual deposits reach highest value ever in October

The ‘stock’ of deposits from individuals reached the highest value recorded by the Bank of Portugal in October, reaching 189,309 million euros, while loans reached a maximum since April 2013.

At the end of October 2024, data from the Bank of Portugal (BdP) indicate that the annual rate of variation (tva), which excludes the impact of variations that were not motivated by transactions per se, of the ‘stock’ of individual deposits in resident banks it was 8.3%, the highest value since February 2021.

According to the central bank, the monthly variation, which was R$ 1,220 million, resulted from the increase of R$ 639 million in demand liabilities – made up almost entirely of demand deposits – and the increase of R$ 581 million in cash deposits. deadline – agreed deadline with prior notice.

Among companies, the volume of deposits in resident banks was, at the end of October, 66,919 million euros, approximately 1,500 million euros more and with a tva of 2.3%.

In the field of loans to individuals, the total amount reached R$131,338 million, 3.1% more compared to October last year and R$506 million compared to September.

The total amount of loans mobilized for housing rose to 101,286 million euros, against 100,851 million euros in September and 2.3% more in annual terms,

For consumption and other purposes, the increase was R$71 million compared to September and 6.1% compared to October last year, to R$30,052 million.

“Growth in consumption purposes slowed down slightly, presenting an annual rate of change of 7.1% (7.6% in September). Loans for other purposes registered the highest annual growth since October 2008 (4.1%)”, explains the BdP.

At the end of October, personal credit totaled 12,500 million euros, car credit 8,259 million euros and 3,130 million euros in credit cards, representing respective values ​​of 7.3%, 9.5% and 8.9%.

For companies, the ‘stock’ was 71,913 million euros, 525 million euros less than in September, but with a tva of 0.8%.

By size, micro-enterprises and large companies had positive rates of 7.8% and 1.4%, respectively, while small and medium-sized companies recorded negative rates of -2.0% and 5.1%.

The industries and electricity and commerce, transport and accommodation sectors presented, in October, negative annual rates of change of 1.3% and 0.9%, respectively (-2.0% and -1.1% in September ) , while construction and real estate activities had a positive annual rate of change (4.8%, against 3.8% in September).
