Israel launches first air strike in Lebanon after approving ceasefire

The Israeli government accuses Hezbollah of violating the agreement; Lebanese state agency said 2 civilians were injured in the attack

Israeli forces carried out the 1st air attack on Lebanon, 1 day after the approval of the ceasefire. According to the Lebanese state agency the offensive was carried out this Thursday (Nov 28, 2024) and reached the Marakaba region, close to the border, and left 2 injured.

“On November 27 and 28, after the announcement of the ceasefire agreement, the Israeli enemy violated the agreement several times, through aerial violations and attacking Lebanese territory with various weapons”said the Lebanese army in an X.

In a statement to Lebanese citizens, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) justified the attack by claiming that “several suspects arrived in vehicles in several areas of southern Lebanon, violating the conditions of the ceasefire”.

IDF forces present in the southern region of Lebanon are enforcing any violation of the ceasefire agreement.”said army spokesperson Avichay Adraee in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

According to the Israeli army, the extremist group Hezbollah had violated the agreement by trying to rebuild bases in southern Lebanon. The Israeli government had already said in announcing the ceasefire that it would have the right to respond to attacks that broke the agreement.

In addition to the offensive on Lebanon, Israel also attacked the Gaza Strip this Thursday (28.nov). The offensive killed at least 26 Palestinians according to local authorities.

Ceasefire AGREEMENT

The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon came into force at 11pm on Tuesday (Nov 26) Brasília time – at 4am this Wednesday (Nov 27) in Israel. The proposal determined the withdrawal of troops from southern Lebanon within 60 days.

Lebanese authorities will take over the south of the country and Hezbollah will be prevented from rebuilding bases on the border with Israel. The United States and France will join a committee to monitor the border region to ensure compliance with the agreement.

Israel reiterated during the announcement that it has the right to respond to the attack if Hezbollah violated the agreement.
