Lira says Van Hattem does not deserve indictment and criticizes PF

President of the Chamber states that the House will go to “the utmost limits to hold accountable anyone who abuses authority or interferes with parliamentary freedom”

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, (PP-AL), criticized this Wednesday (27.Nov.2024) the (Federal Police) of the deputies (Novo-RS) and (PL-PB) for speeches in the plenary. Classified as “worrying” observe the actions of the corporation and said that Casa Baixa will go to “ultimate limits to hold accountable anyone who abuses authority or interferes with parliamentary freedom”.

The congressman from Alagoas said that the 2 colleagues “they are not worthy of the investigations or indictments to which they were subjected” and that the cases “they do not deserve the treatment they received, neither from the Federal Police nor from other bodies of the Brazilian State”.

“The attempt to criminalize speeches made in Parliament, a space for the full exercise of freedom of expression, violates the constitutional clause on material immunity. We cannot tolerate this fundamental right to debate and criticism being threatened by judicial or police persecution.”said Lira.

In a firm speech, he argued that the tribune is “inviolable” and that Congress “is not, and cannot be, the target of external interference that limits the full exercise of the mandate”.

According to Lira, without parliamentary immunity, the Congress plenary “would be subject to limitations and censorship” and that “it would not only compromise parliamentary activity, but would weaken democracy itself”.

“Material immunity is an inalienable right of every parliamentarian. This guarantee must be absolute for demonstrations made in the Chamber of Deputies’ gallery. We will not allow setbacks that threaten this fundamental right.”he declared.

At the end of her speech, Lira considered that she was not looking for “polemicize, confront, disrespect or intimidate”but “Remember that we all have limits”.

The PF decided to indict Van Hattem on Monday (Nov 25) for slander and insult after criticizing the corporation’s delegate Fábio Alvarez Schor during a session in the Chamber on August 14. THE Poder360 found that the corporation considered that the statements were intended to embarrass and offend the delegate, responsible for investigations supervised by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the (Supreme Federal Court).

At the time, Van Hattem said that Schor “creates fraudulent reports to maintain” former advisor to (PL) Filipe Martins “Illegally and without justification” and criticized the arrest warrants against Bolsonaro journalists Allan dos Santos and Oswaldo Eustáquio and the senator (Podemos-ES).

On the same date, also in a speech in the plenary, Corporal Gilberto Silva stated: “I comply with the legislation, Mr. President, unlike this cowardly Federal Police delegate here and I need you to say and have courage, Mr. Fábio Schor, as the parliamentarians said about Alexandre de Moraes’ little bitch, Alexandre de Moraes’ little bitch. He, Moraes, only acts this way because he has his accomplices”.

Through his account on X (formerly Twitter), the deputy said that he fulfilled his “dever”.

“I made complaints in the gallery of the Chamber of Deputies about the conduct of delegate Fábio, who is in charge of several illegal investigations against innocent Brazilians”he stated.
