Neuralink, the neurotechnology company founded by Elon Musk, is now working on a project aimed at returning physical autonomy to individuals with paralysis.
This new project involves a brain chip capable of control a robotic arm with just your thoughts. The project, known as PRIME, aims to extend the capabilities of previous Neuralink implants, such as the N1 chip, by enabling physical movement.
Neuralink announced that it has received authorization to carry out a trial to test this technology, which could transform the lives of people with paraplegia. The objective is to offer patients a revolutionary tool to recover essential motor functions.
In January, the company in a human being, allowing the patient to control a cursor with their thoughts in a few minutes. In August, another patient with quadriplegia exceeded expectations by using the implant to interact with devices, play video games and even draw 3D objects.
PRIME isn’t the only ambitious project on Neuralink’s horizon. The company is also developing a device called Blindsight, designed to restore vision in blind individuals, including those without a functional optic nerve.
Although still in its early stages, Blindsight has already been recognized as an innovative device by US health authorities. Elon Musk stated that initial versions of the system would offer low-resolution vision, but that, with advances, it could eventually surpass normal human visual capabilities.
Despite its advances, Neuralink faces major challenges. Each test must pass rigorous safety and effectiveness evaluations before the technology can be widely implemented. However, the company continues to push the limits.
In addition to the PRIME trial in the United States, Neuralink received authorization to testing its brain implants in Canada. These trials will involve patients with diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and severe spinal cord injuries.
