At stake will be the victory of the far-right candidate
Romania’s constitutional court ordered, this Thursday, a recount of the votes in the first round of the presidential election, according to AFP. The decision comes after far-right candidate Calin Georgescu took the lead.
According to the agency, the court ordered “to recheck and recount all votes in the elections for the post of president of Romania on November 24,” says a statement.
With 99.9% of votes counted, far-right independent politician Calin Georgescu, 62, had 22.95% of the vote. Center-right candidate Elena Lasconi, leader of the opposition Save Romania Union, came second with 19.2%.
As , the result was received as a shock, as pre-election opinion polls had made Social Democratic Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu the favorite. The candidate of the center-right Liberals, Ciolacu’s coalition partners, also failed to secure a place in the second round of the election, which will take place on December 8.
