On Thursday, the European Commission (EC) announced that it had started infringement proceedings against 26 member states, including Slovakia, to which it had sent a formal request. It concerns states that have not fully converted to their own national law at least one of the two EU directives, for which the deadline for incorporation has recently expired. Member states, including Slovakia, must respond to the call by two monthsotherwise the EC will take further steps against the given state. TASR informs about it based on the report of the European Commission.
Challenges relate two directiveswhich the Member States should have transferred into their national law by 17 October. Specifically, it is a directive from the area digital economy and migration and directive regarding of internal affairs and security union. According to the EC, Slovakia has not fully incorporated it into its national law neither of the aforementioned directives.
In case that country does not respond to the formal invitation and does not sufficiently incorporate the directives into national law, the EC can decide to send it a so-called reasoned opinion, that is a formal request to comply with EU legislation. The reasoned opinion explains why the Commission considers that the country violates EU law. It also requires the country to inform the Commission of the measures taken within a specified period, usually these are two months.
