The attack came a day after the start of a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
The Israeli Air Force says it struck a missile depot belonging to the Hezbollah militant group in southern Lebanon on Thursday. The attack took place a day after a ceasefire agreement between the two sides of the conflict came into effect. This is reported by TASR based on reports from Reuters and AFP.
“Terrorist activity was recently identified at a facility used by Hezbollah to store medium-range missiles in southern Lebanon. The threat was thwarted by an (Israeli Air Force) plane,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
Both sides of the conflict accuse each other of violating the ceasefire agreement, Reuters writes.
Israel opened fire
The Israeli army also said on Thursday that its members opened fire on several suspects who allegedly violated the terms of the ceasefire by moving in southern Lebanon. The army of the Jewish state further emphasized that its troops “remain in southern Lebanon and will actively respond to violations of the ceasefire agreement”.
However, Hezbollah claims that Israel is attacking residents who return to villages on the border.
According to the Reuters agency, the Israeli army on Thursday again announced a curfew for the area south of the Lítání river, which began to apply on Thursday from 17:00 local time (16:00 CET) and will last until Friday 07:00 local time (06:00 CET).
The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah went into effect on Wednesday morning. During the 60-day duration of the ceasefire, Israel pledged to withdraw from southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah promised to move its fighters and heavy weapons north of the Lítani River. The ceasefire will be monitored by a US-led monitoring group.
