John Alfred Tinniswood, recognized as the oldest man in the world by Guinness World Records in April this year, has passed away at the age of 112. The news was released by the organization in a statement from the British supercentenarian’s family.
Born on August 26, 1912, the same year as the sinking of the Titanic, John Tinniswood was witness to landmark historical moments, such as the First and Second World Wars and the Spanish Flu and COVID-19 pandemics. Retired since 1972, he worked in finance for companies including Shell and BP after serving in the Royal Army Pay Corps during the Second World War.
Married for 44 years to Blodwen, who died in 1984, John left a family consisting of a daughter, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
When asked about his longevity, John attributed it to “luck”. “Either we live long or we live short, and there’s not much we can do about it,” he said upon receiving the title of oldest man in the world. He added: “If you drink too much, eat too much or do anything in excess, you will end up suffering.”
A great admirer of Liverpool FC, John was passionate about football and had the privilege of witnessing the club’s many achievements throughout his life, including eight FA Cup victories and 17 of the 19 Premier League victories.
After turning 100, she began receiving birthday cards from Queen Elizabeth II every year, a tradition that continued until the monarch’s death in 2022.
John Alfred Tinniswood died in a nursing home near Liverpool, where he had lived since he was 99 years old. Surrounded by music and love, he left a mark as an inspiration for longevity and resilience, with his enthusiasm for life conquering everyone around him. His story will endure as an example of a life full of experiences, passions and affections.
