President Claudia Sheinbaum said, after speaking with the Republican, that the country does not have a policy of “closing borders”

The president-elect of the United States, (Republican Party), stated, on Wednesday (27.Nov.2024), that the Mexican government agreed to stop migration towards the American southern border and talk about actions against the flow of drugs in the country.

According to Trump, he and the president of Mexico discussed joint actions against illegal immigration and drug trafficking over the phone.

“I just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She agreed to stop migration through Mexico and into the United States, effectively closing our southern border. We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive flow of drugs into the United States and also the consumption of these drugs in the United States. It was a very productive conversation!” Trump wrote on social media.

And he concluded, celebrating: “Mexico will stop people from moving to our southern border, effective immediately. THIS WILL HELP A LOT TO STOP THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thanks!!!”

On X (formerly Twitter), Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo also discussed the conversation with the American president, reiterating that Mexico’s position is not to “close borders”.

“In our conversation with President Trump, I explained the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to confront the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights. Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are taken care of before they reach the border,” he wrote. “We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders, but to build bridges between governments and people.”

The statements come after the president of Mexico took a stand against the implementation of tariffs proposed by the American president. On Monday (Nov 25), Trump would implement 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada in order to stop the “invasion of drugs and illegal immigrants”.

In response, Sheinbaum stated on Wednesday (Nov 27) that Mexico would adopt retaliatory measures if Trump applied tariffs on imports from the country. According to the Mexican government, the action could lead to 400,000 jobs in the United States.
