The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, assured this Wednesday on the social network he owns, Truth Socialthat Mexico would have agreed to close its borders to stop the migratory flow towards US territory “with immediate effect.” However, Trump’s transition team has not offered details in this regard and the Mexican Government has not confirmed the statement either, quite the opposite.
“Mexico will stop people heading to our southern border, effective immediately. THIS WILL GREATLY HELP STOP THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE UNITED STATES. Thank you!” Donald Trump wrote on his social network after having a first conversation telephone with the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, two days after the Republican magnate announced on Monday that one of his first decisions will be that of Canada, until the invasion of the illegal migrants and fentanyl.
“I just had a wonderful conversation with the new president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” says Donald Trump in the social network publication, adding that “she has agreed to stop migration through Mexico and to the United States, closing effectively our southern border. “Also, we have talked about what can be done to stop the massive flow of drugs into the US and the consumption of these substances. It was a very productive conversation,” he added.
However, no one in his transition team to the White House has provided additional information about the agreements reached nor has Sheinbaum’s government confirmed such a commitment. Furthermore, the linking of any possible agreement that the Republican may announce is conditioned by the fact that the president of the United States remains Joe Biden, at least until January 20, 2025.
Claudia Sheinbaum’s version
For her part, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has denied Trump’s statement on the social network ‘X’, which before Elon Musk bought it was called Twitter, and has described a different version of a telephone conversation that she describes as ” excellent”.
“In our conversation,” writes Sheinbaum, “I explained the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migratory phenomenon, respecting human rights. Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are assisted before they reach the border.” , explains the Mexican president in a tweet, which concludes exhaustively: “We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples.”
In a previous message, the Mexican president noted that they also addressed issues related to “security issues within the framework of our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl.” Sheinbaum was accompanied during the call by the Foreign Minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, who “is already in contact” with Donald Trump’s transition team to schedule a meeting in which the Mexican Government will present the importance of preserving the Treaty between Mexico , United States and Canada (T-MEC).
Analysts suggest that Donald Trump’s statements could be part of a negotiation strategy reminiscent of the one he used during his first term, when he combined public statements with political and economic pressures.
