Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) appealed to the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for amnesty to “pacify Brazil” and again denied having participated in the alleged coup attempt. The opposition defends the pardon of those investigated for the acts of January 8, 2023.
“I appeal to the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court, I appeal. Please rethink, let’s go for an amnesty, [e o país] it will be pacified”, said the former president in an interview with the program “West without filter”, from the magazine West.
The Federal Police indicted Bolsonaro and 36 other people in the investigation investigating an alleged coup plot. During the interview, he argued that a position in favor of amnesty by President Lula (PT) or Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) could resolve pacification.
“For us to pacify Brazil, someone has to give in. Who has to give in? Mr. Alexandre de Moraes. The amnesty, in 1979: I was not a deputy, people were amnestied who killed, who dropped a bomb, who kidnapped, who stole, who hijacked a plane, and ‘let’s pacify, the game will be over from now on’”, he said.
“If there was a word from Lula or Alexandre de Moraes regarding the amnesty, everything would be resolved. Don’t you want to pacify? Pacifica”, he added. According to the PF, the coup plan included the murder of the PT member, the minister and vice-president Geral Alckmin (PSB). Bolsonaro denies any involvement in the coup attempt and said he did not know about the alleged murderous plan against authorities.
After the indictment was released, senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) defended a “broad, general and unrestricted” amnesty that, in practice, could benefit his father.
“This persecution against Bolsonaro and the right did not start in 2022, 2023 or 2024, it started much earlier, but, to be brief here, the only path to some normality and to some rebalance between the Powers is an amnesty that has to be broad, general and unrestricted – I am increasingly convinced of this”, stated the senator on Wednesday (27).
The former chief executive reiterated that he discussed with commanders of the Armed Forces the possibility of declaring a state of siege in the country. However, as in the interview with the UOL portal this morning, he argued that he only evaluated the measure because he was unable to contact the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to discuss the security of electronic voting machines.
“The Force Commanders speak [em depoimentos] that ‘Bolsonaro discussed with us hypotheses of [artigo] 142, State of siege, State of defense’. And I discussed it, yes. I talked, it wasn’t a heated discussion… Coup using the Constitution? You can use what is within the Constitution”, he highlighted.
Bolsonaro calls the PF report a “piece of fiction”
The former president classified the report made by the Federal Police to indict him as a “piece of fiction”. In the almost 900-page document, the police authority concluded that Bolsonaro “planned, directed and executed” acts to abolish the Democratic Rule of Law and consummate a coup d’état.
“[O relatório] It’s more of a piece of fiction. Talking about a coup d’état with a retired general, four officers and a PF agent is another joke. And as a whole, there is absolutely no proof of anything. They don’t want to get Braga Netto, Heleno, they want to get me. They think I’m evil, the great evil of democracy”, said the former president to Oeste magazine.
General Walter Braga Netto, former minister and former candidate for Bolsonaro’s vice president, is described by the PF as a key player in planning the alleged coup. Both Braga Netto and the general and former minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI) Augusto Heleno were also indicted.
He also stated that he pays a good legal team to defend him with resources coming from donations by Pix from supporters. “I have a good team of lawyers, who I can pay thanks to Pix that people donated to me a year or so ago, and they rushed to read this report. They finished yesterday, and gave me a first impression”, he reported.
