A beauty named Orchid

The history of the orchid goes back really far and is estimated at 100 million years. The name “orchid” is derived from the name of the orchid family, in Latin Orchidaceae, in which there are around a thousand genera and up to 30 thousand species. Orchids are widespread throughout the world, from tropical rainforests to arctic tundras. Since around the 18th century, they have enjoyed considerable popularity as houseplants.

Orchids have a cycle

Although there are exceptions, most orchids have a natural growth cycle. During the summer and autumn, the leaves develop the most. At the end of autumn and the beginning of winter, a flower stalk usually emerges on the plant, and the flowering season begins until spring. The process from the beginning of the growth of the flower stalk to the blooming of the first flowers takes an average of 2 to 3 months. And what conditions does an orchid need for successful cultivation?

Light

Orchids love a sufficient amount of light, but do not tolerate direct sunlight. They do very well on windowsills on the east or west side and can be moved to the south side during the winter.

Heat

Most orchids prefer temperatures between 18 and 25 °C. However, avoid places where there is a risk of drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Humidity

High humidity is very important for orchids. Since the humidity in most homes does not even reach 40%, plants need humidification. You can ensure sufficient air humidity for the plant with water from a sprayer and regular misting of the leaves. However, keep in mind that orchids also benefit from fresh air. Provide them with regular ventilation, which also protects them from fungal diseases.

Substrate

Orchids have very specific substrate requirements. It is best to purchase a special substrate for orchids that is airy and well permeable.

How to water an orchid

Watering orchids requires some care. The substrate should dry out sufficiently between waterings. It is important that the water does not stand in the sub-basin, as this would cause rotting of the roots, which would soon be manifested by the yellowing of the leaves and the falling of the flowers. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of orchid death.

Pour over ice cubes

Use a simple trick for watering orchids, thanks to which you can skilfully avoid overwatering the plant. All you need is some ice cubes. Place 2 to 3 pieces on the substrate and you’re done. The advantage of this method is that the ice will melt slowly and the water will reach the roots gradually. It is a simple and effective method that significantly improves the health and vitality of orchids and prevents unwanted risks of rot and mold.
