Despite the efforts of the team of the mayor of São Paulo, (MDB), to schedule a meeting with the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), in Brasília, this Friday (29), the meeting will need to be held for the week coming. The municipal management’s expectation now is that the conversation will take place on Thursday (5), when the mayor will be in the federal capital for other commitments. Nunes is in Brasília this Friday at the invitation of the president (PT), together with the governor (Republicans). The expectation was that he would get a meeting with Dino to talk about the minister’s decision on the costs of wakes and burials in São Paulo, but the minister is not in the city.

Since Flávio Dino determined, last Sunday (24), that the amount charged for funeral services in the capital of São Paulo be the same as that applied before cemeteries and crematoriums were granted to the private sector, Nunes has been trying to contact the minister. The mayor states that the change would make the prices more expensive than they currently are, since, according to him, the contract with the four concessionaires determines that the value of the services has been frozen since 2019.

Despite this, a survey by the São Paulo Municipal Servers Union (Sindsep) shows that values have tripled in the city. Before privatization, for example, the total cost of a package of services for a person’s burial was R$428.04, in the “popular” category; R$863, “standard”; and R$ 1,507.32, in “luxury”, according to a survey by Sindsep. After the concession of the units to the private sector, the values rose to R$ 1,494.14; R$ 3,408.05; and R$5,737.25, respectively.
