One of Norway’s most famous glaciers has shrunk so much that it will no longer be visible to tourists at the foot of the mountain.
About this informs NRK, writes “European truth”.
The Nygårdsbreen glacier is one of those that has melted the most over the summer of 2024. This is an “arm” of the larger Jostedalsbreen glacier, which is located in the mountain range between the cities of Ålesund and Bergen.
Before, the Nygårdsbreen glacier was clearly visible from a point that was not difficult to reach on foot and attracted tens of thousands of tourists every year.
In the last ten years, the glacier has “regressed” by more than 400 meters. This summer, it retreated into the mountains another 42 meters and can no longer be seen from the usual vantage point.
The Nygårdsbreen glacier in nearby Jotunheimen National Park has retreated 19 meters since 2023.
Similar processes occur with a number of other Norwegian glaciers. Twenty glaciers have completely disappeared in the last 16 years.
Scientists explain this radical melting by climate change.
In October, a 100-year “warmth” record was recorded in the Norwegian polar city of Tromso. The European Climate Agency predicts that 2024 will become the warmest Andean on record.
A group of scientists has warned Nordic governments that global warming has caused a significant change in currents in the Atlantic Ocean, and if the process deepens over several decades, it could lead to radical climate change in Europe.
