The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, stated this Friday (29) that the opinion on the investigation that indicts former president Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people for alleged attempted coup d’état, in the Federal Supreme Court (STF ), will only come out in 2025. The statement was given in an interview with CNN Brazilduring the Brazil Europe Integration Forum (FIBE) event on judicial litigation, in Lisbon.
According to the PGR, the case presents an “enormous complexity” as it involves several people and contains more than 800 pages in the report.
“This is a case of enormous complexity, including the number of people involved. Whatever the next demonstration is, it has to be very responsible and done in a considered, safe and fair way”, said Gonet.
Gonet also declared that “a position in two weeks is unlikely”, given the judicial recess and the end of year festivities.
When asked about postponing the opinion until 2025, the prosecutor reinforced that it is “quite possible”. He also said he wanted to avoid any “hassle” in the process.
Last Tuesday (26), Moraes removed the confidentiality of the investigation into the attempted coup and forwarded the PF report to the PGR. The prosecutor’s office must decide whether or not to file charges against those involved.
When forwarding the files to the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), the minister highlighted that, in the Brazilian judicial system, the Public Ministry (MP) is responsible for criminal action in cases of public criminal action crimes, as occurs in this situation. Therefore, it is exclusively up to the MP to decide whether to file a complaint or request the archiving of the investigation or information pieces.
Regarding the publicity of the files, the minister understood that there is no longer a need to maintain secrecy, as the final report has been presented and all measures and steps requested by the Federal Police have been complied with.
However, he decided to keep Petition 11767, related to the award-winning collaboration agreement of the lieutenant colonel and former presidential aide-de-camp, Mauro Cid, confidential. This decision was taken due to the existence of ongoing investigations and others still in the analysis phase.
According to the investigation, Bolsonaro knew about the alleged planning of a coup d’état and the actions that were being taken to make it happen — which was confirmed by Mauro Cid’s lawyer, last Friday (22).
