5% cut in salaries will be reversed, after a vote in Parliament. Four parties voted against and Ventura made an announcement.
The proposal for the reversal of the 5% cut in politicians’ salaries he was approved in parliament, in the votes on the State Budget for 2025.
The cuts have applied for almost 15 years to the President of the Republic, President of the Assembly of the Republic, Prime Minister, deputies, members of the government, representatives of the Republic for the autonomous regions, deputies to the Legislative Assemblies of the autonomous regions, members of the regional governments, civil governor and vice-governor and full-time president and councilors of municipal councils.
These cuts have been in effect since 2010 and had never been revoked.
Now, the PSD and CDS-PP proposal pointed out that “after more than 10 years, all measures approved within the scope of budgetary consolidation to reduce excessive deficit and control the growth of public debt were revoked”, with the exception of those that dictated a 5% reduction in the gross monthly salary of those holding political positions and executive and non-executive public managers, including those belonging to the local and regional public sector, and those treated as public managers.
“Thus, it is of the greatest justice the restoration of the remuneration situation of those holding political positions and executive and non-executive public managers, including those belonging to the local and regional public sector, and those treated as public managers, by revoking the 5% reduction in their respective gross monthly salary” , reads the proposal.
The end of salary cuts for politicians was approved with the votes against Chega, IL, Livre and BE, abstention from PCP and votes in favor of the others.
The PS also had a proposal on this topic, but as the PSD/CDS-PP one was approved first, it ended up no longer being voted on.
It is worth remembering that the PS parliamentary leader had already guaranteed that the socialists would make viable the PSD’s proposal to end the 5% salary cuts for political office holders and public managers in 2025.
Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento said that eliminating the 5% cut in politicians’ salaries will cost around 20 million euros.
Enough is out
During the debate on this subject, and in a heated discussion with Hugo Soares (PSD parliamentary leader), Andre Ventura announced that no Chega deputy will benefit from this end of the cuts.
“We do without them all! Chega will give up receiving what it should be for pensioners, young people and the country. We will abdicate!” – here the president of Chega repeated the word “we will abdicate” many times, after having challenged deputies from other parties to forego the end of the cuts as well.
In response, Hugo Soares asked André Ventura how many times did Chega deputies waive the expenses of representation in Parliament or the subsidy to which they are entitledat a time when, at the other end of the hemicycle, Fabian Figueiredo (BE) agreed with these questions. “It shows a lot of the throat… We’ll see what they’ll do“, added Hugo Soares.
The following morning, this Friday, Chega placed several protest banners on the facade of the Assembly of the Republic, as a protest.
“Today we couldn’t let it go. At a time when there is no money for pensions or lower taxesthe parties increased the salaries of politicians in this Budget. They will not go unpunished!”, wrote the party president, André Ventura, on the social network X (Twitter).
