Butter prices have skyrocketed in recent months and are reaching record highs in Europe. Strong demand for butter, limited supplies and the preferences of milk processors who prefer to produce more profitable products such as cheese, caused a sharp rise in prices.
Butter also rose in price in Australia and New Zealand, but in September its prices fell from summer highs. A sample of what the prices for a popular food in the USA look like was sent to the editors of Koktejl by reader Monika.
Milk production last year declined in most parts of the world, including Europe, the US and New Zealandthe world’s largest exporter of milk and butter, as low prices and high feed costs have discouraged many farmers. This year, global milk production rose slightly, but lagged behind rising demand. This forced manufacturers to prioritize the production of the most competitive products, such as cheese instead of butter.
Reader Monika in the USA discovered and photographed several types and versions of butter. Some of them we do not have and do not even know. Four butter sticks for baking costs $1.39 (€1.32), butter balls cost $4.99 (€4.74), over 453 grams of unsalted butter costs $7.99 (€7.58), as well sure, but salted butter $6.49 (€6.16). There’s also a huge 908g roll, which also carried a $6.49 (€6.16) price tag. It is questionable whether she did not pay only for the surrounding butters.
