The president of Ukraine, Volodímir Zelenskifor the first time has evoked the possibility of a truce with Russia if NATO agrees to put under your protection the territory that your Government currently controls. In an interview with the cadena Sky Newshas declared himself willing to put an end to the “hot phase of the war”, agreeing to recover the rest of the territory lost in the initial phase of the invasion through “diplomatic means.”
“If we want” to stop the war, “we need to put the territory that we maintain under our control under the umbrella of NATO,” the Ukrainian president declared. In no case, however, would kyiv be willing to recognize Russia’s annexation of eastern and southern Ukraine and would raise as a condition that the invitation to join NATO include the entire territory. “We have to do it quickly (the entry into NATO); and the other part of Ukraine, Ukraine can recover through diplomatic means,” he declared. For the Ukrainian leader, the security guarantees from the military alliance are vital, since it is the only way to guarantee that Putin “will not return” to try again to conquer the Slavic country.
