Tiago Nunes, known by his friends as “Indian”, had been in Ukraine for less than a month, according to reports on social media. He went to Eastern Europe without initially revealing his destination and reason for the trip to his family.
On social networks, friends mourned the loss of the young man. Dozens of vehicles gathered in a motorcade in honor of Tiago in the city of Rurópolis, which is in the southwest of Pará and has around 53 thousand inhabitants.

“In this moment of deep sadness and pain, we express our most sincere condolences to family and friends,” says the note released by city hall.
When contacted, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) did not confirm to Estadão, until the closing of this report, whether the ministry had been officially notified regarding the young man’s death.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, at least three Brazilians have been reported dead in the conflict by authorities. In August 2023, 25-year-old medical student Antônio Hashitani died in combat in the city of Bakhmut, Ukraine.

In the first year of the war, in June 2022, André Hack Bahi, 44 years old, had his death confirmed by the Brazilian Embassy in Kiev. In July of the same year, the ministry confirmed the deaths of Brazilians Thalita do Valle and Douglas Búrigo in a bombing in the city of Kharkiv; both fought as volunteers with Ukrainian troops.

In recent weeks, the conflict has intensified. The United States authorized Ukraine to use American-made long-range missiles and landmines in the war. In response, Russia ordered the mass production of the new Russian hypersonic missile, nicknamed Oreshnik, which was used for the first time in the war on November 21 and surprised by its ability to carry more than one warhead and hit multiple targets.

Ukrainian authorities announced this Friday that Russia handed over the bodies of 502 soldiers killed in the war between these two countries, without revealing whether it was an exchange. “The bodies of 502 defenders who fell in combat were repatriated to territory under Ukrainian government control,” the POW coordination body said. It is the second repatriation of this type this month. In early November, Kiev recovered the bodies of 563 soldiers.
