An event held this Friday (29) at Palácio do Planalto had the objective of, but ended up giving space for the federal government to apologize against and in defense of democracy.
Alongside the governor of São Paulo, (Republicans), and the mayor of the capital of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), both supported by the former president (), ministers from the first level of the government () criticized the coup acts and the plot of murder revealed by investigations.
“It is not easy for a president and vice-president, who have been threatened with death, a coup d’état and everything we have seen recently, to maintain the same attitude of commitment and respect for the popular vote”, said the president of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante .
This was the first direct meeting between Lula and Nunes and Tarcísio’s first trip to the Planalto Palace after investigating the coup plot.
On Tuesday (26), the minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) overturned the confidentiality of the PF investigation, and the documents were sent to the PGR (Attorney General’s Office), responsible for analyzing the evidence and deciding whether to report investigated or not.
According to the final report, the former president led the coup plot at the end of 2022, and the democratic rupture was not achieved due to “circumstances beyond his control”.
According to the PF, “the evidence obtained throughout the investigation unequivocally demonstrates” that Bolsonaro “planned, acted and had direct and effective control over the executional acts carried out by the criminal organization that aimed to carry out a coup d’état and the abolition of the democratic rule of law”.
The PF also says that a series of dialogues between interlocutors, analysis of the location of cell phones and dates and locations of meetings indicate that the , the vice-president, (), and Moraes.
After Mercadante’s speech at the event, Rui Costa, Minister of the Civil House, was even more emphatic, referring to Lula.
“You show, more than ever, the figure of a statesman who does not shake one millimeter, even with all the information and news that has come to light, of those who plotted a coup d’état,” he said.
“They came to plot something that no one in this room or in the country imagined could happen. That someone would have the courage to plot the capture, kidnapping, death of a minister of the Federal Supreme Court, an elected president of the Republic and a deputy -President of the Republic elected”, said Rui.
The Minister of the Civil House also drew attention to the international support given to Lula. “You show the strength and conviction of the statesman that you are, which was made clear at the G20 meeting, putting in the same room what even UN meetings have not achieved, bringing together at the same time, at the same time, so many country leaders .”
Another minister to speak on the topic was vice-president Geraldo Alckmin. “I want to start here by celebrating democracy. How beautiful democracy is. After the elections, the federated entities working together, for the common good”, said the Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce.
Contrary to what normally happens in this type of event held at Palácio do Planalto, Lula did not speak and limited himself to exchanging greetings and direct words with Tarcísio and Nunes.
The governor and mayor of São Paulo made no mention of the revelations of the PF investigation. In their speeches, they only sought to highlight the partnerships in the works, with the support of BNDES and the federal government.
Shortly after Bolsonaro’s indictment, Tarcísio used his social networks to defend the former president and stated that the PF investigation “lacks evidence”.
“We need to be very responsible about serious accusations like this. The president respected the result of the election and the inauguration took place in full normality and respect for democracy,” he stated.
Alckmin also mentioned the difference in treatment given today by the federal government to local managers compared to the times of the dictatorship.
“I was remembering when I was mayor of my hometown, in the sad period of the dictatorship in Brazil, where we, mayors, were separated by political party. I remember a meeting in Paraibuna, with the presence of the President of the Republic, which the color of my badge was different. People were separated. Only people from the president’s party had a meeting. [vamos] celebrate democracy, which is respect for the people, a great protagonist of changes in the country.”
