The head of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed concern.

In the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli army has been attacking for more than a year, anarchy reigns and hunger and looting are rampant. The number of rapes in temporary shelters is also increasing, the head of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for Gaza and the West Bank, Ajith Sunghaj, said on Friday, TASR reports, according to an AFP report.

He expressed concern mainly in connection with hunger. “The breakdown of public order worsens the situation, while looting and fighting over resources, which are limited, are on the rise. Anarchy has reigned in the Gaza Strip, about which we warned several months ago,” Sunghaj said. According to him, the current situation was predictable and could have been prevented.

Tens of thousands of displaced people live in inhumane conditions

He spoke to reporters in Geneva about young women, many of whom have been displaced multiple times, who now complain of a lack of safe spaces or privacy in makeshift shelters. Many women told him about rape or child abuse.

According to Sunghaj, tens of thousands of displaced people from Gaza City are living in inhumane conditions with food shortages. He is said to have seen with his own eyes dozens of women and children digging in huge dumps.

He pointed out that Gaza is increasingly destroyed. “Everyone I met asked for it to stop,” said the head of the OHCHR office.

It is believed that approximately 70,000 people still live in the north of the Gaza Strip. However, according to Sunghai, the UN cannot deliver any aid to them because the Israeli authorities repeatedly prevent the entry of humanitarian convoys.
